Three Buffalo Medical Group physicians who
are Board Certified in Pulmonary and Critical
Care Medicine, provide services to patients on
both an inpatient and outpatient basis. They
also work closely with BMG oncology physicians
to ensure comprehensive lung cancer treatment,
and are on staff at the major hospitals within
the Catholic Health System and Kaleida Health.
Outpatient pulmonary services include
treatment and evaluation of a wide variety
of conditions such as:
- Asthma
- COPD - Emphysema, Chronic bronchitis
- Lung Cancer
- Sleep disorders, including sleep apnea
- Occupational lung diseases (e.g. asbestos
contamination)
- Pleural diseases
- Respiratory conditions such as
pneumonia, tuberculosis, etc.
- Pulmonary Fibrosis (scarring of the
lungs)
The BMG also provides outpatient, state-of-the
art pulmonary function testing to evaluate
lung capacity in patients with COPD and
asthma to determine if smokers have COPD,
and to evaluate patients with such common
lung complaints as shortness of breath, chronic
cough and decreased exercise capacity.
On-site chest x-rays, CT scans of the chest and
ultrasound of the chest also are available on an
outpatient basis. This is very helpful in
expediting the evaluation and treatment of
patients. On-site consultation with radiology
colleagues provides the physicians in BMG’s
pulmonary service with expert interpretation
of imaging studies in a timely manner.
Procedures performed in physician offices
include drainage of fluid from around the lung
and arterial blood gases.
Procedures done in a hospital setting include
bronchoscopy and biopsy during which a
scope is used to biopsy cancerous lung tumors
as well as other non-malignant conditions of
the lung.
