Who should be screened for lung cancer?
- Individuals between the ages 55 – 77
- Have a history of heavy smoking
- Currently smoke, or have quit smoking within the last 15 years
How is “Heavy Smoking” defined?
Heavy smoking means a history of 30 pack years or more. A pack year is smoking an average of one pack of cigarettes per day for one year. For example, a person could have a 30 pack-year history by smoking one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years.
How often should you be screened if you’re at risk for lung cancer?
This answer varies based on the patient, so it’s important to talk to your doctor to find out how often you should be screened if you’re at risk for lung cancer.
